Description

Our offered 1983 BMW Alpina B9/3.5 is a rare high-performance version of the E28-era 5 Series. An early version, in fact number 009 to be built, is bored-out to 93.4mm--with makes it a B9/3.5/0. Among B9’s, this version is sought after and rare. It is understood that 577 versions of the B9 were built by Alpina. Our B9 was exported to the US from Japan in 2018. It is powered by a M30 3.5-litre straight-six engine, with rear-wheel drive via a five-speed overdrive manual transmission and limited-slip differential. The odometer now shows 200,000 km (124,691 miles) from new. However, our B9’s engine and transmission were overhauled and perform like new. An additional feature are the rare ASS seats instead of the Recaro seats which were used in later versions of the B9. The body work is straight and flawless. During its time in the US, our B9 has seen a refreshment including a partial respray. Additional mechanical work completed includes: Engine fluids and peripheral parts replacement, new deko set (stripes) installation, new seals, new windshield locking strips, dash recovering, new tires, new stainless rear muffler (and powder-coating of original Alpina center muffler), radio refurbishment & antenna/speaker replacement, driveshaft overhaul, and wheel refinishing. Alpina Archives Engine/Gearbox When the B9 was first introduced, the flagship of the 5-series range was the 528i. But this engine isn’t based on the 2.8 litre unit, it is instead based on the 3.5 litre six. The engine produces 218 bhp in ordinary form but after Alpina has modified the cylinder head, fitted special higher-compression Mahle pistons, a new camshaft and reprogrammed the Motronic injection system, the engine produces 245 bhp. The torque is increased to 320 Nm. Suspension/Brakes/Wheels To handle the greater power and performance, the B9 has new progressive springs and Bilstein gas-pressure dampers along with 16 in Alpina wheels with 205/55 tires front and 225/50 tires rear. The brakes were updated at front with bigger, ventilated discs (284mm).
